Somewhere in the last thirty years, the dog stopped sleeping in the yard.
The cat stopped being fed table scraps. The Labrador got a bed. Then a bigger bed. Then a memory-foam bed. Then a birthday. Then a Christmas stocking. Then a subscription box. Then a dental cleaning, a dermatology consult, a physical therapist for the hip, and a low-glycemic kibble because the vet mentioned the word prediabetic.
We didn't sit down and decide any of this. It just happened, gradually, one household at a time — and now it's a global cultural shift with a name: pet humanization. Pets are not property or livestock or "companion animals." Pets are family.
That framing changes almost everything about how we care for them. Including — and this is what this post is really about — the standards we should hold their health and wellness to.

Pets live like us — and that's the problem
Here's the paradox at the center of pet humanization: when a dog or cat is treated like a human family member, they inherit human wellness problems.
Consider what that actually looks like day to day:
Sedentary lifestyle. Indoor dogs walk twenty minutes a day, not twenty miles like their working-breed ancestors. Indoor cats might not walk at all. Muscle loss, joint stiffness, and metabolic slowdown follow the same curves in pets that they do in humans who stop moving.

Reduced social variety. Fewer other dogs, less varied stimulation, more separation anxiety. Chronic mild stress becomes the baseline for millions of household pets.
Longer lifespans. Modern veterinary care means dogs live longer than they used to — often 30-40% of their life is now spent in the "senior" years, which barely existed in dogs a few generations back.
