Last week I got an email from a pet parent named Rebecca in Chicago. Her golden retriever, Bella, is nine. Two years ago Bella's vet said she'd likely need daily NSAIDs by the time she turned ten.
Bella isn't on them.
Rebecca's story is not unusual, and it's the reason I ended up spending three years of my life trying to figure out why almost every joint supplement on the pet aisle solves only half of the problem.
Because cartilage is only half of the story.
The muscles that surround your dog's joints do the actual work. They stabilise. They absorb shock. They control every step your dog takes. When those muscles weaken - because your dog is aging, or moving less, or already tiptoeing around a sore joint - the joint takes on more load, not less. The cycle accelerates.
A joint and muscle supplement for dogs that supports both sides of that equation delivers a fundamentally different outcome than a joint-only formula. Here is what the science actually says.
Why joint AND muscle, not just joint
Walk into any specialty pet store and you'll see shelves of joint products. Almost all of them focus on rebuilding or protecting cartilage - glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM. Almost none address the muscular scaffolding around the joint.
That gap is the whole problem.
“Even when cartilage is supported, weakness in the muscles around the joint keeps the joint biomechanically vulnerable. Fix one, ignore the other, and you're always chasing the pain.
Research published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage has shown that dietary nutraceuticals which support joint tissue also exert their influence via broader systemic effects, including shifts in the gut microbiome (PubMed). In other words: joint health is never a single-system fix. It is connected to muscle, to metabolism, and to the gut.
At Rooted Owl® we asked a simple question. If the joint and the muscle are functionally connected, why does the entire category treat them separately?
We built **Joint & Muscle Health for Medium & Large Dogs** as the answer.
Here is the piece we do not say lightly. We are the first company in the world to formulate the UC-II® + L-Carnitine combination for humans, and then the first ever to formulate it for pets. Two clinically studied actives. One capsule a day. A pairing that does not exist anywhere else in either category.

The joint half — UC-II® Type II Undenatured Collagen
Here is what confuses most pet parents about UC-II®. It does not work the way glucosamine works.
Glucosamine is raw material - you feed it to the joint and hope the body builds cartilage from it. UC-II® is different. It works through the immune system.
When your dog takes UC-II® at the recommended dose, small amounts of undenatured collagen travel intact to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue at the Peyer's patches. There, the immune system develops what researchers call oral tolerance to type II collagen - the same collagen that makes up joint cartilage. That tolerance quiets the auto-inflammatory attack on cartilage that drives osteoarthritis.
The best part: it works at roughly 1/40th of the daily dose that glucosamine formulas require.
The evidence for UC-II® in dogs is one of the deepest for any single ingredient in the pet supplement category. Some highlights:
· A placebo-controlled trial in arthritic dogs showed daily UC-II® alone, or with glucosamine and chondroitin, markedly alleviates arthritic pain, with no adverse side effects (PubMed).
· Using ground-force plate pain evaluation, moderately arthritic dogs on 10 mg of UC-II® showed marked pain reduction, with maximum improvement by day 150 (PubMed).
· Healthy Labrador Retrievers on an exercise regimen supplemented with UC-II® had decreased inflammation and cartilage degeneration compared to control (PubMed).
· Head-to-head, UC-II® produced mobility improvements similar to robenacoxib, a prescription NSAID, in dogs affected by osteoarthritis (PubMed).
· A 2023 scoping review in Animals concluded UC-II® is a valid option for the multimodal management of OA and for supporting activity during intense exercise (MDPI).
The UC-II® we source comes directly from Lonza, Switzerland - the ingredient's original developer.
The muscle half — Carnipure® L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative. Its job in muscle is straightforward: shuttle long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane so they can be burned for energy.
In plainer language: L-Carnitine is how muscle turns fat into fuel.
For a joint and muscle supplement, this matters for two reasons. First, muscles that produce energy efficiently maintain their strength longer as your dog ages - which means better joint stabilisation. Second, L-Carnitine supports cardiac muscle the same way it supports skeletal muscle. Senior dogs, working dogs, and breeds predisposed to cardiomyopathy benefit systemically.
What the research shows:
- A 1995 case report of a Labrador with dilated cardiomyopathy showed clear and rapid improvement in clinical, ECG, and echocardiographic indices of cardiac function following L-Carnitine supplementation (ORBI).
- A 2017 study of Labrador Retrievers found that supplementation improved activity intensity, body composition, muscle recovery, and oxidative capacity (PubMed).
- Labs on high-calorie diets given L-Carnitine had prevented weight gain, decreased food intake, and increased basal metabolic rate (Meddocs).
- A 2024 study explored L-Carnitine as adjuvant therapy in canine chronic kidney disease, showing potential to delay disease progression (PubMed).
Ours is sourced as Carnipure®, also from Lonza - a purity-verified form used across human clinical nutrition.
What to look for on the label
If you take the science seriously, five things separate a formula worth giving your dog from one that just fills the shelf:
- Clinically studied actives at effective doses. UC-II® at 10-40 mg per day (dose-adjusted to weight), Carnipure® L-Carnitine at documented doses. Not a proprietary blend that hides both amounts.
- A short, transparent ingredient panel. The strongest formulations are targeted - not stuffed with a dozen also-rans.
- The NASC Quality Seal. The National Animal Supplement Council seal confirms independent standards for labeling, ingredient quality, and manufacturing oversight. This is your first filter.
- GMP-compliant manufacturing in an FDA-registered facility, with third-party testing on every batch.
- Human-grade ingredients and no fillers, colors, or preservatives. If it isn't fit for a human, it shouldn't be in your dog's daily supplement.

One more thing that matters more than owners appreciate: once-daily dosing in a small vegan capsule. Consistency drives outcomes with joint supplements. A formula that requires multiple scoops or a large chew is a compliance problem waiting to happen.
The Rooted Owl approach
**Rooted Owl® Joint & Muscle Health for Medium & Large Dogs** is a once-daily capsule for dogs 30 pounds and up. UC-II® Type II Undenatured Collagen from Lonza, paired with Carnipure® L-Carnitine - the world's first pairing formulated for pets. No fillers, no artificial colors, no preservatives, no excess.
For dogs and cats under 30 pounds, the same actives are dose-adjusted in **Joint & Muscle Health for Small Dogs & Cats**.
Both are produced in a GMP-compliant, FDA-registered facility. Both are third-party tested. Both carry the NASC Quality Seal.
We are also running the first clinical wellness study of a consumer pet supplement in exotic species, in collaboration with the veterinary team at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, using the Maven Pet wearable to collect objective 24/7 biomarker data. The findings will inform the next generation of our formulations.

Final Thoughts
A joint and muscle supplement for dogs should do what the name promises. Support the cartilage with an ingredient the immune system respects - UC-II® is the clinical benchmark. And support the muscles that stabilise every joint with an ingredient that fuels their metabolism - Carnipure® L-Carnitine.
Get both halves right and you stop chasing symptoms. You start supporting the biomechanics your dog needs to keep jumping on the couch, keep taking the long walks, and keep aging with dignity.
If you have been giving your dog a joint-only formula and haven't seen the outcomes you hoped for, this is where I would start over.
Bella did.
