When we designed Rooted Owl® Cardio Support, we made a decision early on that surprised almost everyone we consulted with.
We chose to include exactly two active ingredients in the formulation.
Two.
Not ten. Not fifteen. Not "a synergistic blend of twelve cardiovascular botanicals." Just L-Taurine and Carnipure® L-Carnitine, both at daily wellness doses, both pharmaceutical-grade, both directly relevant to canine cardiac muscle function.
Almost every consultant, formulator, and marketing advisor we spoke with in the early days of the company told us this was the wrong move. "You need more ingredients on the label to compete." "Consumers want to see a big ingredient list." "Add coenzyme Q10, add hawthorn berry, add taurine plus taurine derivatives, add three or four supporting botanicals — otherwise the product looks under-formulated on the shelf."
We ignored all of them.
This is the story of why, and what our customers have told us over the last two years about whether we made the right call.
The philosophy: an ingredient earns its way in, or it doesn't belong
The founding principle of Rooted Owl® is that every product we build should be defensible on the science, not on the marketing. A defensible science-first supplement, in our view, means every ingredient on the label:
1. Has documented clinical or mechanistic evidence for its role in the specific system being supported
2. Is present at a dose the evidence actually supports
3. Is sourced from a supplier that can document the quality and consistency of the material
4. Is not there to inflate the ingredient count, tell a marketing story, or fill a competitive gap
For canine cardiac wellness support, this filter produces a very short list. The two amino acids at the center of the peer-reviewed canine cardiology literature are L-Taurine and L-Carnitine. Beyond those two, the evidence for additional cardiac ingredients in daily wellness supplementation ranges from moderate to speculative to non-existent.
Coenzyme Q10? Reasonable case in some cardiac contexts, but the peer-reviewed evidence for canine wellness supplementation is thin, and the dose economics for meaningful CoQ10 delivery in a small daily capsule are challenging.
Hawthorn berry? Traditional use, some human data, thin canine-specific data.
Grape seed extract? Marketing-driven, not evidence-driven.
Various other "cardiovascular botanicals"? Almost universally in the "not enough evidence to justify inclusion at real doses" category.
If we're honest with ourselves and with our customers, the two ingredients that carry the weight of the clinical case for canine cardio wellness are L-Taurine and L-Carnitine. The rest is padding — added to inflate perceived value, not to actually deliver support.
We chose not to pad.
Why the source matters: the Lonza / Carnipure® decision
Deciding to use L-carnitine was easy. Deciding which L-carnitine to use took more thought.
L-carnitine is manufactured by a handful of global suppliers, and the differences across those suppliers are meaningful — isomeric purity, batch-to-batch consistency, contamination limits, regulatory compliance documentation. Bulk-market L-carnitine can be a very different product from pharmaceutical-grade L-carnitine, even though both bear the same generic name on a label.
We chose Carnipure® from Lonza — the Swiss pharmaceutical materials company whose actives are used in prescription human medications and premium human nutraceuticals globally. Carnipure® is the pharmaceutical-grade, branded, standardised L-carnitine that clinical research relies on. When you see it on a label, you know exactly what you're getting.
This is the same principle we applied to our joint & muscle formulation — where the Rooted Owl® Joint & Muscle Health capsule uses Lonza-supplied UC-II® Type II Undenatured Collagen. The Lonza sourcing relationship is central to the quality tier we operate at.
Sourcing pharmaceutical-grade branded actives from Lonza is meaningfully more expensive than sourcing generic bulk actives. That cost is absorbed into the product price, and it is a real fraction of what a Rooted Owl® supplement costs versus a lowest-cost competitor. We think that trade-off is the right one.

Two years after launch, the customer response to the two-ingredient formulation has been the clearest possible validation that we made the right call.

The pattern in the reviews maps directly to what the two-ingredient stack is designed to support: cardiac muscle energetic function (Carnipure® L-Carnitine's role in fatty acid oxidation) and amino acid substrate availability (L-Taurine's role in cardiac muscle function).
We're not seeing customers report vague, generalised wellness improvements that could plausibly come from any of ten ingredients. We're seeing customers report exactly what the formulation is designed to deliver — meaningful, observable changes in energy, mobility, and daily function. That's the signal we look for when we ask ourselves whether a product is actually working.
The broader operating philosophy
The two-ingredient decision for Cardio Support is a specific instance of a general principle that runs across the Rooted Owl® line:
· Turmeric — three actives (245 mg standardised curcumin + 5 mg piperine + 50 mg Vitamin C), not ten
· Joint & Muscle Health — two branded actives (UC-II® + Carnipure® L-Carnitine), not eight
· Mushroom Immune Support — a focused blend of standardised medicinal mushrooms, not a "kitchen sink" formulation
· CBD Calming Oil — whole-plant hemp in a lipid carrier, backed by our own multicenter clinical trial (APS101), not a herbal blend with token cannabinoids
Every product is built to the same rule: short, focused, evidence-first ingredient lists at real doses. The clinical case for each ingredient has to be defensible on its own before we add it. If it doesn't clear that bar, it doesn't go in.
This philosophy is why we've been comfortable pricing at the premium end of the pet supplement category — the price reflects the specific manufacturing decisions (pharmaceutical-grade branded actives, mini vegan Capsugel® capsules, third-party batch testing, NASC Quality Seal, GMP-compliant facility) that add real cost and add real quality.
What we won't do
To be equally clear about what we won't do:
· We won't add ingredients just to lengthen the label. If the science doesn't support inclusion at a real dose, the ingredient doesn't go in.
· We won't switch to lower-tier actives to reduce cost. Carnipure® stays. UC-II® stays. Standardised curcumin at 95% stays.
· We won't move to chew or treat formats to boost conversion. The capsule delivery format is a formulation decision, not a marketing decision.
· We won't make claims we can't defend. No "supports heart health" without substrate; no clinical language without clinical evidence.
The two-ingredient Cardio Support formulation is a specific expression of these commitments.
Bottom line
We built Rooted Owl® Cardio Support with two ingredients — L-Taurine and Carnipure® L-Carnitine — because those are the two amino acids the peer-reviewed canine cardiology literature centers on, and because everything else that goes into a typical multi-ingredient cardio supplement is padding rather than substance.
Every early advisor told us this was the wrong move. The customer base has told us it was the right one.
