- Karan Madan, BA, BSc, MBA — Founder & CEO
Every company has a founding thesis. Rooted Owl®'s is not complicated: pets deserve the same wellness standard modern humans give themselves, and someone should build a company that actually delivers on that.
That is the sentence. Everything else — the ingredient discipline, the clinical trials, the veterinary partnerships, the third-party testing, the NASC quality seal on every bottle, the multi-year Fresno Chaffee Zoo wearable-biomarker study we're currently running in exotic species — is the operating consequence of that founding sentence.
This post is a plain-English introduction to what Rooted Owl® is, why it exists, and what makes the company different from most of the pet supplement category.
Where the interest came from — a childhood in India
Long before there was a company, there was a kitchen.
I grew up in India, in a household where the wellness ingredients now being rediscovered by the global human supplement industry — turmeric, ashwagandha, milk thistle, black pepper, ginger, tulsi, triphala — were not "wellness ingredients" at all. They were just food. They went into the cooking. They went into the daily glass of warm milk. They went into the home remedies my mother reached for when someone had a sore throat, or a fever, or a slow morning, or a stiff back.
This was not folk medicine dressed up as science. It was accumulated intergenerational knowledge — thousands of years of Ayurvedic and household practice — about which plants supported which biological functions, and how they should be prepared, combined, and dosed for real physiological effect.
Turmeric with black pepper, cooked into fat. Ashwagandha as an adaptogen for cortisol regulation. Milk thistle for liver support. The exact same ingredients that now anchor the credible end of modern human wellness science — and the exact same ingredients that anchor most of the Rooted Owl® portfolio — were in my house before I understood what a controlled clinical trial was.
That is where the interest started. Not in a lab, not in an MBA classroom, but in a kitchen where the boundary between food and wellness support did not exist because the same plants did both jobs.
Modern nutraceutical science has spent the last three decades doing what feels, from that vantage point, like slow catch-up. Publishing clinical trials on ingredients my grandmother used weekly. Isolating standardised extracts of compounds that had been part of household diets in South Asia for generations. Building formulation discipline around pairings — like curcumin with piperine — that had been coded into traditional recipes for two thousand years.
None of this is a substitute for rigorous scientific validation. But the combination is what makes it powerful: ingredients grounded in centuries of real-world use, formulated to the precision of modern peer-reviewed evidence, dosed to the standards of modern clinical practice. That combination is the specific formulation ethos Rooted Owl® is built on. And it started for me in a kitchen in India before it became a company in Delaware.
Where the company came from
I trained as a scientist before I trained as an operator. My academic background is in the biological sciences, followed by an MBA that put an operating lens on top of the technical foundation. My earlier company operated in the human wellness and pharmaceutical space, where the standards of evidence, formulation discipline, and quality assurance are high — because in that industry, they have to be.
When I moved from human wellness into pet wellness, the same India-origin instinct came with me. The Rooted Owl® Turmeric formula is essentially a modern, standardised, precision-dosed version of turmeric-with-black-pepper — the pairing my mother put into golden milk when I was seven, now formulated at a 5 mg piperine + 245 mg curcumin ratio that is roughly double the ratio used in the 1998 Shoba clinical trial that first validated the pharmacology of that traditional pairing.
The Liver Support formula is milk thistle at clinical dose — same ingredient class Ayurvedic practitioners have used for hepatic support for centuries. The forthcoming feline calming and cognitive formulas will use ashwagandha at doses grounded in modern human clinical trials — same adaptogen my grandmother reached for during high-stress weeks.
The bridge from Indian household wellness tradition to modern rigorously-formulated pet supplements is short, and it is direct.
When I began looking closely at the pet supplement category around 2020, the gap was obvious. The biology of dogs and cats is close enough to human biology that most of the wellness science that had matured over the previous two decades in humans — standardised botanical extracts, bioavailability co-factors, clinically validated dose ranges, third-party quality testing — should have translated directly into pet supplementation. But it largely hadn't.
The pet supplement category was mostly built around a different logic: convenient marketing claims, ingredient decks that looked impressive on the label but delivered sub-clinical doses of the actives, minimal third-party validation, and almost no brand-sponsored clinical trials on the actual products being sold. There were exceptions. There were credible pieces. But the average pet supplement product in 2020-2022 would not have passed a rigorous formulation review in the human wellness industry.
I decided to build the exception, at scale. That is Rooted Owl®.
The founding principles
Every product in the portfolio and every operational decision at the company runs through the same set of principles:
1. Human-grade ingredients, not pet-grade shortcuts. Every raw material in every Rooted Owl® product is sourced to the same quality standard as a credible human supplement. There is no "good enough for pets" tier.
2. Standardised extracts at clinically studied doses. Every active ingredient in every formulation is standardised (95% curcuminoids in turmeric, standardised polysaccharides in mushrooms, standardised silymarin in milk thistle, branded UC-II® and Carnipure® actives where applicable) and dosed to match the peer-reviewed evidence base for that ingredient. No marketing megadoses. No sub-clinical minidoses.
3. Mechanism-first formulation. Every product is built around a specific biological mechanism — Peyer's patch immune modulation for joint support, COX-2 and NF-κB inhibition for anti-inflammatory support, beta-glucan immune modulation for immune support, endocannabinoid system modulation for calming. Where a mechanism requires a bioavailability co-factor (piperine with curcumin, lipid carriers with cannabinoids), the co-factor is present at the right ratio.
4. Independent verification. Every product is manufactured in a GMP-compliant, FDA-registered facility, third-party tested on every production batch for potency and heavy metals, and carries the NASC Quality Seal — the pet supplement industry's most rigorous voluntary quality standard.
5. Own the clinical evidence where it matters. For product categories where the strongest evidence tier is a species-specific clinical trial and one doesn't already exist, we generate it ourselves. That's how the APS101 multicenter CBD clinical trial came into being.
Those five principles are the operating consequence of the founding sentence. They govern what we make, how we make it, what we say about it, and what we refuse to say about it.
Three things Rooted Owl® is genuinely first at
The pet supplement category has been around for decades, so "first" is a claim to make carefully. Here are three where Rooted Owl® genuinely holds the position:
The world's first UC-II® + L-Carnitine combination for pets
Rooted Owl® Joint & Muscle Health pairs Lonza's UC-II® Type II Undenatured Collagen with Carnipure® L-Carnitine in a single capsule. This is the first combination of its kind — a joint-and-muscle formulation that treats the biomechanical system as an integrated whole rather than as separate joint and muscle categories.
The formulation was designed first for humans and then adapted for pets, in that order — which is the reverse of the direction most pet supplements travel. Available in medium & large dog and cat & small dog formulations.
A brand-sponsored GCP-compliant CBD anxiety trial
The APS101 multicenter clinical trial was designed and conducted with Statking Clinical Services, an independent Contract Research Organization, with medical monitoring by Dr. Trina Hazzah, DVM. Six-round dose-escalation protocol. CBARQ-validated behavioral endpoints. Full bloodwork safety monitoring. Independent biostatistical analysis.
The flagship finding: statistically significant reduction in Separation-Related Problems at 0.75 mg/kg BID (p = 0.003). The trial is, to our knowledge, the only GCP-compliant multicenter clinical trial of a commercial pet CBD product for anxiety currently in the US market. It is the direct evidence base for the wellness dose range printed on our CBD Calming Oil label.
The first commercial-supplement clinical wellness study in exotic species
We are currently running a first-of-its-kind clinical wellness study in exotic species, in collaboration with the veterinary team at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, using the Maven Pet wearable to collect objective 24/7 biomarker data. The study evaluates the impact of targeted wellness supplementation on activity, sleep, resting heart rate, and other physiological markers in captive exotic animals — a population whose wellness needs have historically been under-studied.
The scientific insights from this work will inform the next generation of Rooted Owl® formulations, and the methodology itself will hopefully accelerate rigorous wellness research across the broader veterinary field.
The product line today
The Rooted Owl® portfolio currently spans thirteen SKUs across the dog and cat wellness spectrum:
- Joint & Muscle Health (Medium & Large Dogs)
- Joint & Muscle Health (Cats & Small Dogs)
- Turmeric (Curcumin + Piperine + Vitamin C, for cats + dogs)
- Mushroom Immune Support (Reishi + Shiitake + Maitake, for cats + dogs)
- Cardio Support (L-Carnitine + L-Taurine, for dogs)
- Urinary Support (Cranberry + Echinacea + Vitamin C, for dogs)
- Liver Support (Milk thistle extract, for dogs)
- Spirulina & Chlorella (Blood support, for cats + dogs
- Weight Management (Carnipure® L-Carnitine, for cats + dogs)
- Mobility Plus Bundle (Joint & Muscle + Turmeric)

- CBD Calming Oil (whole-plant hemp tincture, clinically studied)
- Plus size-specific variants of the bundles for smaller breeds
Every single product runs through the same five-principle formulation discipline. Every single label is written to be defensible on the evidence, not stretched by the marketing.
What comes next
The next 12-24 months of the product roadmap extend the same operating principle into new categories:
· A full feline wellness line covering kidney support, cardio for cats, calming, cognitive support, allergy, and taurine — each formulated with the same discipline as the existing dog line
· Continued clinical research generation, expanding beyond the APS101 CBD trial into additional species-specific evidence for our core actives
· Deeper integrative-veterinary partnerships, including the ongoing Fresno Chaffee Zoo exotic-species wellness study
· International expansion into markets where premium pet wellness demand is growing but the supply of credible science-led formulations remains thin
None of this is a departure from the founding thesis. All of it is the natural extension of that thesis, applied to more species, more conditions, and more geographies.
The invitation
If you've made it this far, you are the kind of pet parent Rooted Owl® was built for.
You care about what your dog or cat is actually putting in their body. You read labels. You think about mechanism rather than marketing. You want the same kind of science-led wellness support for your pet that you'd want for a member of your own family — because that's what they are.
The full product line is at rootedowl.com. Our CBD Calming Oil — the product with our own clinical trial data behind it — and our Mobility & Calm Bites are at rootedowlcbd.com. Every product on both sites is built on the same operating principles described above.
If you're a veterinary professional, retail partner, or wholesale buyer interested in the brand, we're always open to a direct conversation. If you're a pet parent, we hope the products speak for themselves.
Bottom line
Rooted Owl® exists because pets deserve the same wellness standard modern humans give themselves, and no one else was building the company that would deliver that at scale with the required formulation discipline.
Five principles. Thirteen products. Two websites. One clinical trial (and counting). One exotic-species wellness study currently underway. One founding sentence that governs every decision.
That is the company. That is what we build. And that is what we will keep building.
